Amidst doubts and political instability, Prime Minister Sushila Karki is currently preparing to leave Baluwatar after successfully holding a historic election. Former Chief Justice Karki, who took over the reins of the executive following the Gen Z uprising, successfully conducted the March 5 House of Representatives (HoR) election despite a challenging time. With the election results finalized and a new government taking shape, Karki seems elated to have successfully navigated such a monumental task.

Against this backdrop, RSP's Kalika Khadka interviewed Prime Minister Sushila Karki for her views about the turmoil created after the Gen Z movement, mounting pressures on traditional parties and her personal reflections on ascending to the head of government. Excerpts:

The election of members of the House of Representatives was held peacefully, how are you feeling?
The election was held peacefully amidst uncertainty. Everyone who wants the country's well-being is happy, I am also happy. We were able to fulfill the responsibility assigned to the government on time. It feels like joy.

How do you remember the challenges of taking charge in the difficult situation of the country?
There were many challenges. The time was only six months, and even the old parties and those who called themselves 'Gen Z' were not in favor of it. Even foreign diplomats would say, 'Is it possible?' We did not have a large organization behind us, but we focused on our work without paying attention to the criticism.

Where did the courage and confidence to lead in such difficult situations come from?
The confidence came from within. I felt that my body and strength were like those of a 16 to 18-year-old. I was taught from a young age not to be afraid and that anything is possible if I dare. I did not want anything personally, I just wanted the country to be saved. That selfless spirit gave me courage.

At what point did you start to feel confident that the election would happen now?
After the Election Commission started working and we addressed the problems of the families of the martyrs of the 'Gen Z' movement, the atmosphere started turning favorable. We received assistance including vehicles from neighboring countries. We intensified coordination with the security agencies and the Election Commission, which made it possible to be confident about the election.

The old parties appear weak and the new parties are seen as strong in the election, how do you take this?
These results signal a youth-led demand for reform. This is a moment for the old guard to reflect rather than panic, and for new parties to stay grounded despite their success. Everyone should respect the votes given by the people. The new ones should respect the old ones and the old ones should accept the wave of the new ones. Winning and losing is natural in politics, the people do not forget mature leaders.

What is your message for the new government?
The new government should first fulfill the three demands made by 'Gen Z' - good governance, corruption control and employment. A massive overhaul is needed in the bureaucracy within Singha Durbar. We must eliminate employee procrastination and cultivate a culture of accountability to ensure projects are completed on time. Furthermore, we need to build a strategic foundation that provides job opportunities, encouraging our youth to build their careers at home.
