Sergio Gor, Special Envoy of US President Donald Trump for South and Central Asia, has arrived on a three-day visit to Nepal.
Diplomat Gor landed at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) by a flight of Nepal Airlines a while ago, leading a six-member delegation.
While in Kathmandu, he is scheduled to meet with Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal and Finance Minister Dr Swarnim Wagle. Gor will also meet with Nepali Army Chief Ashok Raj Sigdel during his stay in Nepal, it is learnt.
It is not yet clear whether he will meet Prime Minister Balendra Shah. Earlier, when the team of US Assistant Secretary of State Samir Paul Kapur, who visited Nepal on April 20, contacted Shah for a meeting, Shah did not meet him.
Gor, who is also the incumbent US Ambassador to India, is considered a trusted diplomat of President Trump. An official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told Nepalkhabar, "The schedule of meetings for the high-level visit has already been fixed. We cannot say anything about the meeting between Special Envoy Gor and the Prime Minister right now."
According to Foreign Ministry sources, Trump’s envoy, Gor, has requested a meeting with the Prime Minister this Friday or Saturday. The Prime Minister has yet to make a decision regarding the request.
Gor is the highest-ranking American diplomat to arrive in Nepal after the Balendra Shah government was formed following the March 5 elections.
