Special Court on Thursday convicted former chief of the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) Deep Basnyat and former Minister Chhabi Raj Panta of the Baluwatar land embezzlement scam.
Basnyat was convicted of the land scam for his role he played in transferring the ownership of the Baluwatar land to an individuals while he was the secretary at the Ministry of Physical Planning and Construction.
Panta was then secretary at the Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation. Later he had become the minister.
Basnyat and Panta have been sentenced to two years in jail along with a fine.
The anti-graft body on February 5, 2020 had filed a case against 175 individuals including Basnyat and Panta at the Special Court concluding that 136 ropanis of Lalita Niwas land had been embezzled.
