Prime Minister of Nepal Sher Bahadur Deuba has expressed deep sorrow over the demise of former Chinese President Jiang Zemin.

China’s former president Jiang passed away on Wednesday in Shanghai, at the age of 96.

Posting a twitter message on Thursday morning, President Deuba said, “I am deeply saddened by the passing away of former president of the People’s Republic of China Jiang Zemin. He was a great friend and well-wisher of Nepal. I would like to express my deepest condolences to the Government and the people of China and the bereaved family members.”

According to a China Daily report, Jiang died of leukemia and multiple organ failure in the course of treatment in Shanghai at 12:13 pm yesterday.

In December 1996, Jiang had visited Nepal during which he met with Nepal’s Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba.

The two sides had agreed to establish the China-Nepal Friendly and Neighborly Partnership of Generations into the 21st Century.

Jiang, who served as the party’s general secretary from 1989 to 2002, was the first top leader not to have fought in Mao Zedong’s Communist revolution, which culminated in the creation of the People’s Republic following a civil war victory in 1949.
