The Department of Roads, Kathmandu has started blacktopping New Road on the condition the compensation would be sought from the Kathmandu Metropolitan City.
The Road Division started blacktopping the road saying that the metropolis dillydallied in applying asphalt layer on the road nor did it respond on time.
Meanwhile, metropolitan police have reached New Road after the Road Division started blacktopping it. Supporters of Mayor Balendra are disrupting the work saying the metropolis was not allowed to work.
However, the officials of the Road Division are continuing with their work despite intervention by the city police.
“We started blacktopping New Road after the important road in the downtown was left neglected and messy for a long time,” said Pramod Khatiwada, engineer at the Department of Roads, Kathmandu, “The 210-meter road is being blacktopped. Up to a 1.5-meter pavement on both sides of the road has been left for pedestrians.”
Earlier, the Road Division had given a two-day ultimatum to the metropolis to blacktop New Road.
“We will move forward with the case against the metropolis, seeking compensation for the violation of the Public Road Act, 2002,” said Khatiwada.
He further said that the total expenditures will be determined only after the blacktopping is compete.
