Today is January 1. The New Year 2025 has begun from today according to the Gregorian calendar.
It is believed that the AD system started after the death of Jesus Christ.
Pope Gregory XIII brought this Gregorian calendar into use in 1582, by replacing the Julian calendar. Hence, this year is designated according to the Gregorian calendar.
Roman ruler Julian Caesar introduced the Julian calendar.
Due to various disputes and disagreements, Russia adopted the Gregorian calendar over 200 years after its introduction by Pope Gregory XIII, according to Dr Khilanath Bastakoti, a former administrator and astrologer.
This calendar was imposed in various countries during the colonial era and now has been in use worldwide. Even though it is not used officially in Nepal, foreigners visiting Nepal do use this calendar and the celebration of New Year's Eve has been gaining popularity, of late.
New Year's Eve was celebrated with enthusiasm in popular tourist destinations such as Thamel and Boudha in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Sauraha, and Lumbini.
Revelers flocked to Thamel, Boudha, Swayambhu, and New Road in Kathmandu on Tuesday night to mark the beginning of the New Year 2025.
