VVIPs including President observe Indra Jatra (photos)

Indra Jatra is being celebrated at Basantapur Durbar Square in Kathmandu today. Indra Jatra, which is celebrated by worshiping Indra, the god of rain and the king of heaven, is considered to be the greatest festival among the historical and cultural festivals of Nepal.

It is celebrated in various places including the Kathmandu Valley. It is a historical and cultural festival that began during the reign of King Jaya Prakash Malla in the mid-18th century.

The Newar community has been celebrating this festival in a grand manner with the installation of a wooden pole (lingo) with a flag fluttering named after the Hindu God Indra at Hanumandhoka.

VVIPs reached Basantapur Durbar Square on foot to witness the Indra Jatra today. After the Kathmandu Metropolitan City banned vehicles inside the premises of Hanumandhoka, the VVIs came to see the Indra Jatra on foot.

President Ram Chandra Paudel, Vice President Ram Sahay Prasad Yadav, Speaker Devraj Ghimire, Home Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha, Education Minister Ashok Rai, Tourism Minister Sudan Kiranti, Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balendra Shah, Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol, among others reached Indra Jatra on foot.

They had walked from the monument of Juddhashamsher in New Road to the Gaddhi Baithak.
