The Newa community has observed 'Yomari Punhi' also known as Dhanya Purnima in the Kathmandu Valley on Tuesday.
Newa people gathered at Basantapur Durbar Square and marked the festival by organizing a special program.
This festival is observed by Newa Community by making a traditional Newa cuisine called ‘Yomari’ on the day of Dhanya Purnima (which falls) in the second month of Nepal Sambat.
It is made from rice flour dumpling stuffed with chaku, jaggery, sesame and shredded coconuts. In Newa language, ‘Yo’ means favorite and ‘Mari’ means bread, and when combined ‘Yomari’ is a ‘favorite bread’.
A belief has it that if ‘Yomari’ is placed in the granary and eaten after four days, it will bring, health, wealth and prosperity in the family.
This festival is being observed in Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur as well as in those places densely populated by Newa community.
