The Obama Foundation, founded by former US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama, has named Sanam Doka Sherpa as one of the world's top five exemplary women.
The Foundation listed her in the world’s top five women for her outstanding work in the field of education and the women's empowerment.
Sonam Doka Sherpa is the founder of The Small World (TSW) based in Nepal. Sherpa has been actively working for the girls’ education and the empowerment of women in the remote areas of Solukhumbu district for the last 10 years.
Congratulatory messages are pouring in on Sherpa on social networking sites after she featured in the list of the Obama Foundation.
“Our institute has been promoting girls' education in far-flung areas of Solukhumbu. I am thrilled to get connected with the Obama Foundation. I am happy that a villager from our community has been recognized by a world leader. This recognition has also expanded the scope of my responsibilities,” said Sherpa.
The other women listed by the Obama Foundation alongside Sanam are Jackie, Tameka, Karla, and Myriam.
Sherpa had also participated in the Girls Opportunity Alliance Network Summit held in Athens in 2023.
