Holi, the festival of colors, was celebrated as the victory of truth over falsehood and good over evil in Nepal today.
Also known as Fagu Purnima, as it falls on the Falgun Shukla Purnima, it was celebrated in the hilly region with gaiety by exchanging greetings, dancing, and smearing assorted colors at each other among friends, relatives, and near and dear ones.
According to a Hindu myth, Holika, the sister of King Hiranyakashyapu, lacked devotion to the gods. At the behest of her brother, she tried to immolate her pious nephew Prahlad, who worshipped Lord Vishnu. However, unlike Prahlad who was protected by his faith, Holika perished in the flames, instead.
Nepali Holi revelers and foreigners gathered at Basantapur Durbar Square today and observed the festival with gaiety and fervor.
