Four people of a family died after a landslide triggered by incessant rains washed away their house at Phaktanglung Rural Municipality-2 in Taplejung district in the wee hours of Friday.
The deceased are 70-year-old Ram Bahadur Limbu, his wife Jasmaya, 48, and their twin daughters Ganga and Jamuna, confirmed DSP Rawal, the chief of the District Police Office, Taplejung.
"They had a two-story house made of stone and clay on a steep slope. Four members of the same family died when their house was swept away by a landslide around 1 am today," said Rawal.
He further shared that domestic animals also died when a shed next to the house was washed away by the landslide.
Similarly, in another landslide in the same village, 40-year-old Yugen Limbu and his three-year-old daughter were injured.
"The incident site is a four hours' walk from the district headquarters," said DSP Rawal. Meanwhile, the security personnel have been deployed to the incident site and the rescue work is going on.
He said that the exact details of the damage caused by the floods and landslides in Taplejung are yet to be established.
The eastern hilly region of Nepal has been witnessing heavy rains since last Wednesday night. Six bridges have been washed away in the Paktanglung Rural Municipality, disrupting means of transportation, DSP Rawal said.
