The coalition government has decided to cancel the decision taken by then Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane on the contract deal related to various topics including the National Identity Card (NIC).

A cabinet meeting held on Tuesday took a decision to this effect, a minister privy to the meeting informed Nepalkhabar.

The minister said the government will now investigate the decision taken by Lamichhane.

The procedure introduced by former Home Minister Lamichhane which breached the Public Procurement Act has been canceled by the cabinet meeting today.

“The contract agreement related to the national identity card issued by Lamichhane breaching the existing law has been canceled”, a minister told Nepalkhabar, “Now the government will form a probe panel for further study on this matter.”

Home Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha had already prepared to annul the procedure that awarded private companies the responsibility of building a mechanism to obtain personal details of citizens.

With this, the NIC contract awarded by Lamichhane to the private companies has also been canceled.

Lamichhane, who became Home Minister on December 26, had approved the procedure on December 28.
